Video Description:
Carpometacarpal (also known as) CMC arthroplasty, is a common surgical intervention for CMC deterioration resulting from arthritic degeneration. The cause of arthritis at the base of the thumb is thought to be the result of a combination of factors including family history, repetitive pinching or twisting of the thumb and general overuse. Thumb arthritis can also occur when there is a history of trauma, fractures or dislocations of the thumb. Thumb arthritis is seen most often in females over the age of 50.
This series of three 10-minute videos will take you through the initial evaluation process, continue with the fabrication of a volar forearm-based CMC thumb spica orthosis which will be utilized for the time period designated by the surgeon. The final video will show the reassessment process and the advancement of the post-operative rehab program.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be better able to:
- Perform an assessment of a post-operative CMC arthroplasty patient, including range of motion, sensation and function.
- Identify the most appropriate orthosis to utilize post CMC arthroplasty.
- Establish a comprehensive home exercise program at time of initial assessment and at 6 weeks post surgery.
- Fabricate a volar forearm-based thumb spica orthosis to utilize throughout the protective phase of rehabilitation.
