2016 Baltimore Hand Therapy Review Course
Friday, October 7, 2016 - Sunday, October 9, 2016
Curtis National Hand Center @ MedStar Union Memorial Hospital - Baltimore, MD
Day 1: Pre:Course: Foundational Science of the Upper Extremity: An Anatomy and Kinesiology Review
Days 2 and 3: Comprehensive Survey of Hand Therapy
Day 1 Description
Friday, October 7 (Pre-course)
Foundational Science of the Upper Extremity: An Anatomy and Kinesiology Review
A working knowledge of the anatomy and kinesiology of the upper extremity provides a solid foundation for therapeutic evaluation and intervention. Using classroom and cadaver lab prosection projected into a lecture hall, this pre course will review the anatomy and biomechanics of each joint, examine the brachial plexus and innervation patterns of the arm and hand, and allow for guided prosection using upper quarter cadaveric specimens. The prosection will have a live feed into the lecture hall with a facilitator to allow attendees to have interaction with instructors. During the second two days of the course, prosected cadaver specimens will be available in a rotating format at lunch breaks to allow for additional hands on learning. Each attendee will be allowed one thirty-minute session in the cadaver lab either the second or third day of the course.
Day 1 Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify the foundational science concepts which inform effective clinical decision-making and practice in upper extremity rehabilitation.
- Differentiate the biomechanical aspects of normal and abnormal motion as influenced by the musculoskeletal system of the upper extremity.
- Identify critical anatomical structures which provide stability, mobility, coordination and sensation in the upper extremity.

Days 2 and 3 Description
Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9
Comprehensive Survey of Hand Therapy Review
This course is designed to provide a comprehensive review of the evaluation and intervention processes pursued for typical diagnoses in upper extremity rehabilitation. Advanced clinicians will describe fundamental concepts, clinical reasoning, and evidence to provide a multi-faceted approach to the hand therapy process. Adjunctive methods for intervention will be analyzed as a means to facilitate outcomes, and an expert panel will be offered on Day 2 during the review questions segment to allow a high level of attendee-faculty interaction via case discussion. Each attendee will have a total of 30 minutes in the cadaver lab either on Saturday or Sunday. Sign up for cadaver lab times will be on a first come first serve basis starting on Friday morning. These labs will have 10 attendees in each lab and 5 attendees to each cadaver.
Days 2 and 3 Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Recognize key assessment and treatment tenets of hand therapy practice with particular focus on clinical reasoning, case discussion and evidence-based practice.
- Identify appropriate plans of care for a variety of diagnoses including but not limited to fractures, tendon injuries, arthritic conditions, peripheral nerve injuries and complex multi-system injuries within the upper extremity.
- Identify appropriate orthoses utilization for a variety of diagnoses within the upper extremity.
