ASHT Volunteers: This Week is for YOU!

National Volunteer Week is an annual celebration observed in many countries around the world to promote appreciation for the power volunteers have to make an impact in the world. ASHT could not be what it is today without the countless hours our members contribute toward the goals and mission of our society. This is an opportune time for all of us to recognize the invaluable contributions of others who give so much of their time and talents.

National Volunteer Week was established in the US in 1974. It was promoted by President George H.W. Bush in his 1989 inaugural address, where he first described and later helped found the Points of Light Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to promote the spirit of volunteerism. Global Volunteer Month is an extension of this week, running the entire month of April, and promotes a global culture of volunteerism.

National Volunteer Week is also a fantastic time to help raise awareness of the continuing need for volunteers. ASHT has numerous opportunities, from microvolunteer tasks with a limited time commitment to year-long commitments for committees, divisions and board positions. Turn your passion for hand and upper extremity therapy into action and get involved! Access our online volunteer portal and find a place for your own unique vision and resources to help ASHT continue to be a positive force in the world. From my own personal experience, I know you will be glad you did.

The next time you encounter one of the many volunteers who help support the mission and goals for ASHT, be sure to thank them for their service. To all our ASHT volunteers, thank you for lending your time and efforts. You truly are an inspiration, and this week of April 17-23, 2022 is dedicated to YOU!
