Webinar Description:
This webinar will provide a brief overview of common pain medications consumed by patients who seek hand therapy services, including pharmacological interventions that are issued on a prescription and an over-the-counter basis. Mechanisms of action, common side effects and adverse reactions will be discussed. Strategies for effective monitoring and quality patient education will promote empowerment of therapists to function optimally within their established scope of practice. Considerations related to patient safety will be emphasized.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
- Recognize the role of a hand therapy providers related to pharmacology in terms of education, monitoring and reporting that aligns with contemporary scope of practice
- Discern relevant questions to ask all patients who receive hand therapy services as part of a comprehensive assessment process that includes pharmacological considerations
- Identify strategies for recognizing and reporting adverse drug reactions in patients
- Determine the mechanism of action and known side effects for common pain medications consumed by patients who receive hand therapy services
- Distinguish reputable, low-cost resources that have the potential to enhance the medication screening process for competent hand therapy providers
