Course Description:
Hands-on Orthotics is a lab-intensive, customized course designed to improve orthotic fabrication skills. This course is for beginner to intermediate practitioners/hand therapists. Participants receive a digital course manual, and orthoses are customized according to the class.

Course Objectives:

  1. Course participants will demonstrate ability to fabricate several custom orthoses
  2. Course participants will identify indications/contraindications of the orthoses shown below
  3. Course participants will demonstrate knowledge of practical applications of orthoses

Orthoses To Be Fabricated:   

  1. PIP Gutter
  2. Thumb Spica
  3. Posterior elbow Orthosis
  4. Volar wrist support
  5. Static progressive Finger flexion orthosis
  6. Muenster
  7. Thumb Spica

Continuing Education Credit:
The course has been approved for 8 contact hours, or 0.8 CEUS, from the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and the Board of Certification of Certified Athletic Trainers (BOC-ATC).


Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Limited enrollment is planned to ensure quality of course and ample instructor-participant attention. Cancellation of registration up to two weeks prior to course date will result in a refund minus a $50 cancellation fee. THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS AFTER THIS ESTABLISHED DEADLINE. It is the responsibility of the registrant to notify ASHT of cancellation in writing or by email to education@asht.org. Refunds will be issued within 30 days of notification. In the unlikely event that a course is canceled, ASHT will provide full refund of the registration fee only.

Daniel Acker, OTR, CHT

Dan works at Georgia Hand Shoulder and Elbow in Atlanta GA. He is a 1992 Graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and received his CHT in 1998. He has been an adjunct professor at Georgia Tech University in the Department of Orthotics and Prosthetics teaching upper limb anatomy, evaluation, and orthotic fitting principles for 21 years, and currently holds the same position at Kennesaw University in Georgia.

Dan has authored chapters in the 3rd and 4th editions of the Test Prep for the CHT Exam book, ASSH’s book Current Concepts in Surgery and RehabilitationThe Atlas of Orthotics 5th edition, and contributed to The Rehabilitation of the Hand latest edition regarding the 12 essential functions of the hand for which there is currently a webinar available on ASHT’s website for study.
