Course Description:
This is an evidence-informed course for the upper extremity practitioner to survey topics relevant to proficiency in hand therapy and CHT Exam Prep. Fundamentals and algorithms for therapeutic evaluation and intervention will be reviewed. The course begins with a hands-on anatomy lab. Participants will identify structures on themselves, a partner and the instructor. An in-depth review of the extensor mechanism is presented with an evidence-informed review of treatments, protocols and orthotics. Evidence-informed treatment for flexor and extensor tendon injuries, OA, neuropathies and wrist pain will be explored. This course will present information-focused interventions based on a strong body of evidence and clinical experience. 

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify surface anatomy and perform provocative tests.
  2. Describe effective treatment techniques and the elements of orthotic design for most common upper extremity conditions.
  3. Discuss the extensor mechanism and apply the latest treatments and orthotics to avoid and correct deformities.
  4. Utilized improved evaluation techniques using ASHT standards.
  5. Gain insight into chronic pain and develop treatment strategies.
  6. Demonstrate clinical judgement in choosing provocative tests and protocols considering sensitivity, specificity, PPV and LR.

Continuing Education Credit:
The Foundations in Hand Therapy course has been approved for 8 contact hours, or 0.8 CEUS, from the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and the Board of Certification of Certified Athletic Trainers (BOC-ATC).


"Hands-on Orthotics" Course - Day 2

Course Description:
Hands-on Orthotics is a lab-intensive, customized course designed to improve orthotic fabrication skills. This course is for beginner/intermediate practitioners/hand therapists. Participants receive a digital course manual, and orthoses are customized according to the class.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Demonstrate ability to fabricate the custom orthoses shown below
  • Identify indications/contraindications of the orthoses shown below
  • Demonstrate knowledge of practical applications of orthoses

Orthoses To Be Fabricated: 

  • Wrist cock-up
  • Relative motion
  • Anti-claw (figure of 8)
  • Ulnar gutter
  • Radial nerve
  • Boutonnière, mallet
  • Trigger finger
  • Short opponens
  • Resting hand


Continuing Education Credit:
The Hands-on Orthotics course has been approved for 8 contact hours, or 0.8 CEUS, from the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and the Board of Certification of Certified Athletic Trainers (BOC-ATC).


Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Limited enrollment is planned to ensure quality of course and ample instructor-participant attention. Cancellation of registration up to two weeks prior to course date will result in a refund minus a $50 cancellation fee. THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS AFTER THIS ESTABLISHED DEADLINE. It is the responsibility of the registrant to notify ASHT of cancellation in writing or by email to education@asht.org. Refunds will be issued within 30 days of notification. In the unlikely event that a course is canceled, ASHT will provide full refund of the registration fee only.

Mary Barnes, MOT, CHT, CIND

Mary Barnes has been a CHT for over 25 years. She is an instructor for ASHT’s Education on Tour, Hands-on Orthotics, the Tennessee Occupational Therapy Association, Integrative Dry Needling, the Arthritis Foundation and Belmont University. She also teaches internationally through ASHT’s International Traveling Course and ASHT’s International Committee Virtual Education Series.

Mary is the author and instructor of the Foundations Course and International Traveling Course. Mary has completed international medical mission trips with Healthcare Volunteers Overseas and SurgiCorps International. She is the recipient of the AAHS International Volunteerism Award for an international mission to Ghana. She serves in the Education Division as project for lead for Education on Tour and on ASHT’s International Committee. She is the former Chair of the Tennessee Board of Occupational and Physical Therapy Examiners. Mary is the recipient of many awards including TnOTA Therapist of the Year and ASHT Grassroots Award.

Lisa Perrone, OTR/L, CHT, CKTP

Lisa has over 36 years of experience as an occupational therapist and over 30 years as a Certified Hand Therapist. She graduated from Northeast Louisiana University. She has worked at a Level I Trauma Center for the past 16 years where she treats patients with a variety of UE trauma as well as repetitive motion injuries and various other UE impairments. Lisa has spoken at ASHT conferences, ASHT sponsored courses and various other courses at the local and national level. Lisa is a Certified KinesioTape Practitioner from Kinesio University. She is a member of the ASHT Education Division.
