Webinar Description:
Pain is a complicated phenomenon affecting many people in various ways and resulting in negative alterations in quality of life. A small percentage of hand injuries can turn into chronic pain or complex regional pain syndrome, which require a multidisciplinary approach to address various problems. With the opioid crisis in North America, chronic pain drives patients into more addictions resulting eventually in loss of lives. Therefore, an increasing awareness in restoring functional abilities by using non-pharmaceutic interventions rather than use of medications or surgeries to control various types of pain is needed.

However, the evidence of both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions is still limited. Treatment of pain is still challenging. It is imperative to have new ideas in the treatment of pain. The iKNOT approach is a 10-principle approach to cover physical and bio-psychosocial aspects of pain. The iKNOT approach can prevent acute onset pain from turning into chronic pain. We just need to start early.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  1. List the 10 principles of iKNOT approach, which can help to prevent chronic pain
  2. Apply the approach in one case study of hand injury
  3. Develop a guideline for buying/creating the right equipment for a hand clinic and setting up home exercise programs for patients to prevent chronic pain
