Nonadherence is a challenging multifactorial phenomenon with both clinical and business implications. This presentation will address the problem of nonadherence in upper extremity rehabilitation and advocate the need for a behavioral approach to the issue. The construct of adherence will be conceptualized and differentiated from that of compliance. Relevant information from theories of health behavior will be introduced and linked to practice. Specific strategies will be presented to facilitate therapy attendance, home exercise performance and orthosis wear.

By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to
- Differentiate between the constructs of compliance and adherence
- Identify the relevance of the World Health Organization’s model of adherence to hand therapy
- Recognize the significance of a behavioral approach to address the problem of nonadherence in hand therapy
- Apply theoretical information to facilitate therapy attendance, home exercise performance and orthosis wear
