Webinar Description:
Gymnasts have a unique skill set allowing them to utilize their upper extremity to produce both power and gracefulness. The significant loads produced through the upper body, long practices, and increasing difficulty of skills result in both traumatic and overuse injuries. This webinar is a collaboration between a pediatric hand surgeon and a certified hand therapist discussing evaluation and treatment of common injuries seen in gymnasts, including wrist pain, medical epicondyle fractures, elbow ligament injuries, osteochondritis dissecans, and shoulder overuse injuries. The audience will better understand the surgeon's clinical reasoning and gain treatment ideas to allow the athletes to return to their sport.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Describe common diagnoses that affect the upper extremity in pediatric and adolescent gymnasts and understand the biomechanics of these injuries
  • Recognize movement patterns that predispose a pediatric and adolescent gymnast to overuse injuries
  • Describe conservative and surgical treatment options surrounding pediatric upper extremity gymnastic injuries
  • Identify three treatment interventions to implement to improve function in a pediatric patient
