Webinar Description:
Upper extremity burns present complex challenges that can significantly impact function, participation and quality of life. This webinar provides an evidence-informed overview of contemporary approaches to the evaluation and management of upper extremity burns across the continuum of care. Participants will explore acute and rehabilitative considerations, including wound healing principles, edema and scar management, splinting and positioning strategies, range-of-motion and strengthening interventions and functional retraining for activities of daily living. Emphasis will be placed on interdisciplinary collaboration and practical clinical decision-making to optimize upper limb recovery and long-term outcomes for individuals with burn injuries.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
- Describe common mechanisms and classifications of upper extremity burn injuries and their implications for functional recovery
- Identify key acute and rehabilitative intervention strategies for managing edema, maintaining range of motion and preventing contractures in upper extremity burns
- Understand the physiology of wound healing and scar development leading to contractures
- Differentiate orthosis, positioning and scar-management approaches across phases of healing to support optimal upper limb function
- Apply evidence-based principles to select appropriate therapeutic interventions that promote functional use of the upper extremity in individuals with burn injuries
