Most people aspire to become part of something larger, and volunteering is the first step to accomplishing that goal. I began volunteering with ASHT by serving on the Awards Committee as my firsts step. Through that experience, I had the opportunity to work with therapists outside my own community. From that experience, I have built wonderful connections with those individuals and still reach out to them from time to time.
I was concerned about the time commitment being a full-time mother, full-time clinician and part-time adjunct professor. I was pleasantly surprised that the commitment was manageable. Understanding what the expectations of a particular role is essential to deciding if this is a reasonable commitment. Once I knew I could balance my volunteer role with life, it was a game changer!
I am currently serving as the board intern and have gained a whole new perspective for what happens behind the scenes. I am learning new skills as I better understand the policies, procedures, goals and mission behind ASHT. The passion and drive of the individuals involved are infectious and admirable. It’s inspiring to be a part of an organization that wants to move forward with improving, expanding and developing hand rehabilitation on a local, national and international level. This is a belief I value and feel there is no better way to contribute to our profession than by volunteering.
So my advice is take the first step! There have been times I have felt like a “fish out of water.” but I feel the organization cares about their volunteers. You can see patience and guidance in its fullest form. ASHT has empowered me and helped build my self-confidence and self-esteem by increasing my understanding of our field. This has been a rewarding experience and I plan to continue in some capacity to support our profession through ASHT.
