This Hand Therapy Week, most of us find ourselves in a different place, both mentally and physically, compared to years past. We have all been changed in some way from the pandemic, and as things evolve, this period of time will no doubt impact us forever. This has taken a toll on each of us.
Among therapists, there is uncertainty, fear and worry, and most of us are overwhelmed. These feelings can influence our mental and physical well-being, which in turn directly affects our therapeutic use of self. As healthcare professionals, we give so much of ourselves to help our patients, and often neglect ourselves. We can’t let our “gas tank go empty.” So how do we “fill our tank”? How do we handle the uncertainties while still taking care of ourselves and our patients?
Here are some ways to help “fill our tank” and slow down:
- Nourish your body: go for a walk, take a virtual yoga class, work virtually outside and enjoy the sounds of nature, take time to enjoy a smoothie or try a new exercises video.
- Nourish your mind: listen to an inspirational podcast, start a new movie/TV series, write in a journal or pick up a new hobby.
- Nourish your soul: do a random act of kindness, cuddle with your children, bond with a pet, play a board game or meditate for five minutes.
Take a moment to step back from the fear, worry and anxiety and soak up the sun, enjoy your pets, bake that cake, read a book and take a much needed and well-deserved long, deep breath.
During Hand Therapy Week this year, I want to celebrate you and your health. You may be wearing many hats during this season, including that of a hand therapist. Remember that in the midst of change, some things have remained constant: our passion and continued commitment to our patients. I hope we all find glimmers of goodness and hope during this unprecedented time. And when things return to normal or the new normal, I hope we continue doing activities that “fill our tank.”
Happy Hand Therapy Week!
