The Value of Volunteering

Posted by Kim McVeigh, OTR/L, CHT 04/21/2013

Why do I value volunteering?
The answer is quite simple: I have always gotten more out of volunteering than I have given. That sounds selfish in a way, but giving back is intrinsically rewarding. Volunteering with ASHT has been educational, expanded my network of individuals I now talk with on a weekly basis and provided me with professional growth and leadership skills I never knew possible.
I truly have developed a network of passionate professionals I can call on any day of the week for assistance with patients, practice management, reimbursement or any aspect of our profession. Volunteering has turned the Annual Meeting into a reunion for me as I look forward to seeing my colleagues and friends who all share my passion.
I first started volunteering for two reasons:

A fellow CHT who I respected asked and I was flattered that this individual thought I had the skills to participate in such a great organization.

I have always believed in giving back to the profession that I am both passionate for and that has given so much to me.

Volunteering has expanded my horizons and provided me with new skill sets, which have in turn launched other interests and areas of my career. Volunteering is a personal choice and ASHT has been respectful in what time I could or could not provide, always been appreciative and recognized the work their volunteers provide. The society has enough opportunities for most any interest level. National Volunteer Week is April 21-27, 2013. Volunteer within your community and support your profession.
