Counting Down to Chicago!

Posted by Sue Michlovitz, ASHT President 10/09/2013

I’m excited to share with you a few of the program highlights of the ASHT Annual Meeting in Chicago, Oct 24-27, 2013.
THURSDAY
Our Opening Session at 4:30 PM will honor physical therapist and epidemiologist Dr. Joy MacDermid who has been awarded millions of dollars in research funding during her budding career. Following Dr MacDermid’s address, “How Did I Get Here? The Journey from Clinician to Clinician Scientist and Beyond”, the session will end with a discussion with attendees.
FRIDAY
At 10:40 AM, the Nathalie Barr Lecture “Proportions and Perspectives: The Magnitude of Our Relationships” will be presented by Dr Paul La Stayo, Journal of Hand Therapy Editor and Professor of Physical Therapy at University of Utah.
Collaboration with related hand organizations cannot be overvalued or overstated. ASHT has developed a teaching relationship with the American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS). This is the second year that their vice president will provide an AAHS funded general session at our meeting. AAHS Invited Speaker, Dr. Mark Baratz, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, joins us at 4:00 PM for his talk “Hand Surgeon and the Therapist: When I Need You Most”.
SATURDAY
The morning begins at 8:00 AM with Invited Presidential Lecturer, clinical researcher and Canadian physiotherapist, Dr. Christine Novak – “100 & Counting ...The Glamorous Life of a Clinical Researcher: Practical Applications”.
Dr. Dick Berger, Ms. Sue Blackmore, Dr. Scott Kozin and Dr. Rebecca von der Heyde join me for the Presidential Panel at 9:10 AM.
….. "Illuminating the Shadows: What about the Other 15%?", a discussion about those who don't do well or may be predicted not to do well during and after our care.
Our afternoon session begins at 2:30 PM with "Seeking Balance in Your Life: Improving Patient Care" by Keynote Speaker Dr. Jon Kolkin, fine art photographer, health coach and hand surgeon.
International Invited Speaker, Ms. Marta Beatriz Pineda, founder of the Guatemala Hand Therapy Society, a champion in hand therapy care and the education of hand therapists, will discuss “Global Exchange of Evidence in Practice” at 3:20 PM. A panel discussion follows.
SUNDAY
In the last issue of ASHT Times I stressed the importance of being involved in your parent organization. Don’t miss our ASHT/AOTA/APTA legislative panel discussion at 9:00 AM, titled “Adaptation to the Changing Legislative and Reimbursement Climate”.
Please remember to bring new gloves to donate to our Share the gLOVEs program for the children in Chicago public schools.
Safe travels everyone. I’ll see you in Chicago!
