The holiday season is here, and soon we will all be caught up in the parties, feasting and gifts that go with these holidays. Giving Tuesday, begun seven years ago by the 92th Street Y and the United Nations Foundation as a counter movement to the consumerism represented by Black Friday and Cyber Monday, reminds us to consider giving as well as receiving. Giving Tuesday is observed by cities and states throughout the US, as well as internationally, as a day when charities, families, businesses, community centers, students and retailers can come together to give back and support the causes they believe in. On this day, and quite simply throughout the year, Giving Tuesday encourages volunteerism, community service and philanthropy. Giving Tuesday has demonstrated that when people come together, they can build a better, stronger community.
Giving Tuesday has been designated as the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving -- this year, November 27. In 2017, more than $300 million in the US alone was donated for various causes and organizations, as well as countless hours of volunteer work, food and clothing donations, and other acts of kindness. This year, consider a donation to ASHT for your charitable giving, the only US organization that solely represents the field of hand therapy. A donation to one of ASHT’s restricted funds, such as the Annual Meeting Sessions Fund, the Vision Fund or the Awards and Scholarship Fund, is not only tax deductible but reaps benefits for you and all other therapists. Your gift will help support the education and training of current and future hand therapists, and promote the growth of evidence-based practice.
